Another Job
Remember that application to work at another hospital? Well, this week I start there. Paperwork done, ID with photo secured and READY TO ROLL! This is the same large city hospital where I did my clinicals for my first 6 months of training. And includes a smaller hospital in the other direction from our house where 3 grandchildren were born. This is still on-call work (per diem) which means mostly nights and weekends with a few days scattered here & there.
But I love the work. Last night I spent some time with a very sick patient. The nurse warned me this person was not coherent and didn't seem to understand his/her condition. (protecting anonymity)But some time later when the nurse arrived to check the vitals and the IV, the patient was slowly and lucidly explaining to me the situation and what the doctors had been saying. As I was leaving the nurse thanked me and said, "I've never, ever heard this patient speak like that."
All I did was introduce myself and encourage talking. The hardest part seemed to be remembering the childrens' ages.
